Scotland call ups, French flair and old flames rekindled for the Calcutta Cup!

Scotland Selections
As you will have seen on our social media congratulations is due to Merryn Gunderson and Alex Stewart on their selection in Scotland’s 6 Nations training squad. Both have been a key part of our women’s squad and have been the stand out players in their recent Edinburgh squad call ups.

Women in Edinburgh and Glasgow Teams
A huge congrats to all our women players who have been successfully representing Edinburgh and Glasgow in the Celtic Cup. Some great rugby being played and we’d encourage our members to get along and support them at games where they can!

Riviera RC
Following a successful visit from CRAC Rugby a few years ago our men's team recently entertained Riviera RC (Nice, France) in a friendly on the morning of the Scotland v France International. Riveria were a great bunch and we had a fantastic game in the mud before enjoying a few beers together... Father Abraham would have been proud!

6 Nations Weekends Are Here!
The 6 Nations is here and we have some big days planned! As usual we want to invite our members to bring friends and family along to enjoy a big atmosphere at Union Park. After the successful world cup events we’re looking forward to welcoming back the Shisanyama Boys back with their BBQ delights and of course the bar will be well stocked!

Dollar Academicals
As part of the Calcutta Cup day build up we welcome Dollar Academicals for a friendly fixture and some libations before the big Scotland v England game. There is of course a long history between the clubs as many Dollar Academy graduates have been part of Corstorphine history. We look forward to rekindling the friendship and welcoming them to Union Park on Saturday. Game kicks off at 12:00 with plenty of pre and post match banter around the Calcutta Cup game.

Keswick Deposits
Calling all tourists – a reminder that deposits are due! Please get the cash paid in asap. If anyone is keen to come on tour please get in touch with one of the tour committee. (Sven, Youngy, Westy or Flash) We’re touring the lake district on 11th and 12th May.

Building Up Project – Skills request
After a successful meeting last night we gained some valuable comments and suggestions that will be added to our thinking when it comes to the detailed design of the build. We of course welcome anyone input from those in the trades and related areas that may be able to help us fine tune things. And of course when the build comes we’d appreciate some support in some of the work that needs done! More details to come! Please contact Steve Wright or Rod Strachan should you wish to help.

Brewery Change over & Bar Upgrade
If you’ve been in the clubhouse in the last few weeks you will have noticed the new taps… the brewery change over has been successfully implemented and the new beers are being enjoyed by all. We’re about to bring forward some work on upgrading the bar area so again we’d appreciate anyone with experience in this area to step forward and help.

Mike Paris
We have been saddened to hear that Mike Paris passed away some months ago. Mike was a gentle giant of a man and was a much liked member of the club. As well as being a player Mike also worked behind the bar for a period. Despite his menacing look from behind the taps his warm smile was always a welcome sight.

Bill Fotheringham
Further to our recent intimation of Bill's terminal diagnosis of bone cancer we regret to advise that he has now succumbed to it and passed on.

Parky paid this tribute to him “Many of you will have known him for various lengths of time, for me it was fifty years from when I was a young captain and had to keep him under some sort of control especially with regard to his "meaningful discussions" with referees!
One of my first memories was to avoid him if at all possible in man to man tackle practice and my last of walking with him a few short months ago in the Stow valley and he at eighty five chasing an itinerant dog through the Gala water. I hope those of you who knew him will have many such memories.”
