John Mclean is the man who is credited with starting it all. Club founder and Past President sadly passed away on Monday evening after a period of ill health.
John has been a huge part of the clubs history and has been an influence throughout his life on all things happening at Corstorphine RFC.
The Corstorphine Amateur Athletics Association was formed in 1920 and included cricket, athletics, football, hockey and of course rugby sections for youths residing in the area. The Rugby Club and its parent Athletic Association was disbanded at the outbreak of the war in 1939 and was not reformed until 1950 when former pre-war players Alex Watson and Jock Waugh persuaded John Mclean and David Fell to recruit sufficient local players to form 1st and 2nd XV to play in the Edinburgh district league for Junior Clubs. John’s determined nature and hard work persuaded many players to join and the club blossomed from that point.
John played for several years before going on to become the Club President through the majority of the 60’s from 1962-1968 where the club won the Edinburgh District league on several occasions. John was instrumental in the development of the club and was a driving force behind the Santa-Punt-It Christmas parties that helped raise money for clubhouse and changing room improvements. John also played a big part in the Suttonians tours that ran from 1955 to the 90’s. John had been a regular figure at Union Park until his health started to deteriorate a few years ago.
The Club has grown from humble beginnings and has grown to be what we know and love today, without John’s hard work and influence it would never have achieved the success we’ve had, friendships we’ve made and the precious memories of good times at the club (on and off the field)… and those that are to come!
We will be forever in his debt.
Our heartfelt condolences to the family at this sad time.
