The men's 1st XV faced a tough well drilled North Berwick side on Saturday. Another difficult week as Covid kept our regular coaching team at home.
While the home side struck first through a Muru-King penalty it was to be North Berwick who would take the points. While there was some very good play in attack from the Cougars (particularly our go forward), North Berwick seemed happy to soak up the pressure and were content to kick on 1st phase which meant they were seldom defending near their line.
Corstorphine struggled to get width on their attack in part due to a quick defensive line. When it did go wide we scored through Harry Loakman midway through the first half. Things were finely balanced and Corstorphine were managing to keep themselves in it.
However, the Cougars struggled to cope with some of the running lines that the North Berwick backs were running and this allowed them to create space wide. NB took their opportunities when they came and with around 60 mins gone were well in control of the game and the result. However the cougars scored late to bring some well-deserved respectability to the score line to finish the game at 15-36.
Having watched the game back men's Head Coach, John Macdonald, commented "All in all, the effort and endeavour was top quality. Discipline was night and day to last week. North Berwick are out in front at the top of the league yet we dominated possession and I felt the score line flattered them a bit."
This week is an away trip to Dunbar, which will again be a stern test for the boys.
